engine misses hesitates or stumbles mitsubishi pickup. Sign In

1988 mitsubishi pickup 2.6 liter 230,000 miles recently rebuilt motor. the truck would periodicaly hesitate or stumble during acceleration. Then it would go for days without any problems. Then all of a sudden there would be the hesitation again. Usually the problem would act up under a load or going up hills. Now the truck basically stumbles or hesitates every time I drive and right away. But usually under a load. I have replaced the coil the distributer i checked the fuel pump and it is operating good. The fuel filter is new. the plugs and wires are in good shape there does not seem to be a vacum leak. the cap and rotor are in good shape. I used carb cleaner and sprayed around intake manifold and carb and vacume lines the idle did not change. the coil and distributer i did get from a pick and pull. the timing is correct.I have no clue as what it could be now. Thanks-- Joe

With ignition parts, you can't tell if they're good or not by looking at them... I've seen clean, great looking plug wires spiking at over 40kv & on the reverse oil soaked, swollen, ratty looking ones scope out just fine with no problems...

If it has been a while since you've changed the plugs or wires, since this seems to be an intermittent, I would be tempted to changed them out just to eliminate them as a possible problem.

If you have a way to check KV or burn time then try to do that while the problem is happening...

The plug wires are relatively new. i don't really understand what you were talking about burn time or kv. I did take the wires off and put them 1 at time on a spark plug to see how they were sparking. The ark went about 5/8 of an inch to a ground. They seemed to be sparking very well. I have noticed that the truck is running worse then ever and the problem is only when the truck is under a load or in gear. It Idles and revs up just fine out of gear.
Thanks Joe

We won't worry about Kv or burn time, sounds like you don't have access to a scope.

With the problem you posted, it really sounds like an electrical problem. The thing with electrical problems, the worst mistake you can make is crossing something off the list because it's new or looks good. You have to make sure it's good.
With this problem, since it only does it under load you probably aren't going to be able to find the bad part with an ohm meter. By the time you get the part off, it will have cooled down enough where it would ohm out ok. It this was a hard fail or no start then odds would be pretty good that you could find the culprit with an ohm meter.

I could be wrong about this being a secondary ign problem but from the symptoms you posted this is probably what I would look at 1st.

I guess one thing you could do would be to get a helper, have them power brk the truck where it misses and mist the plug wires with water. If you see any arching to ground then you either have a bad plug or bad wire.... Doing this at night sometimes helps to see the arc.

I'm drawing a blank right now on any other good tricks you can try........I'm sure if someone else has something to add, they've jump in.....
