94 ford ranger timeing belt broke

 1994 ford ranger, 2.3 ltr 2 plug per cyl.
3000+ The timeing belt broke.
I was told that my 94 ranger has a interference engine, & that the head has to sent out to be overhalled before the belt can be replaced.
Some people that I spoke to said no Just replace the belt.
My question is send the head out or what?
Is someone blowing smoke up my exaust pipe?

No, the 2.3 is not an interference engine
