I have a 2004 Ford Ranger Edge with less than 40,000 miles engine size im not sure but its 6 cylinder single cab. My rear brakes are in need of repair but I'm not sure what I should purchase to replace them. There are drum packages and shoe packages and so on. I don't want to replace something that doesn't need to be replaced and pay a fortune for it. What should I buy? I'd rather buy the brakes and have them installed than paying for a whole package at a repair shop. Unless it would save money just getting the package at a shop but I still need to know what to replace so they aren't ripping me off. Thank you.

No harm intended but if you don't know the engine size then I suggest that brake work is over your area of DIY work. The money you save could cost an accident! Why are you so dismayed that all techs are a "rip off?" Are they disc or drum? At 40k if drum brakes need work from wear out you probably have more than a routine job on your hands! T
