Truck starts and runs for a couple seconds than idle drops and truck dies..

I have a 2003 Sierra 1500 hd with the 6.0 Liter Engine,,, for 2-3 years i put up with it idling low every now and than and even stalling on me here and there.. Cleaned out the Throttle Body a couple weeks ago and truck instantly ran like it was brand new again. i was amazed .. but now i left my house the other day and got a couple blocks away and lost rpm"s and truck stalled when i hit the gas.. it would start back up and run rough for a second or 2 and than die.. I've changed the Alternator, Fuel regulator, and checked the coils are all good, fuel filter is less than 2 years old, plugs were changed about 6 months ago.. my Next thing i'm going to try is the Idle Control Valve???? Is this most likely the problem? any suggestions? tks...

get the codes pulled before you swap any more parts out. Post the exact code numbers here and we can narrow down the search from that.

You need to get a fuel pressure gauge and test the fuel pressure. This engine requires a minimum of 55PSI to run. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

just got done with the code reader and it did not shoot me no codes or even pending codes, just said the (Mil) is off... would a Sh!tty battery maybe be the problem? About to pull the shot gun out and just shoot the truck..

You should first follow HT's recommendation of checking the fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge when you are experiencing your symptoms. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

ok will do.. I will be able to test the pressure with the truck not running right? Saw something about just turning the ignition on and off multiple times until it reaches its max PSI.

It should reach regulated pressure after one key cycle and that's what we want to find out.

So purchased the tester and just tested the truck and no pressure at all... I take it that I will be now Replacing my Fuel Pump right? I had someone listen for it also and he said he could not hear it..

I know this may appear kind of stupid, but there is a TSB (04-08-49-018E) floating around for no starts or stalls because the engine isn't getting any fuel due to an empty tank of gas. The TSB was for the fuel level sender giving inaccurate readings, so you might want to make sure there is actually fuel in the tank and your gauge is reading properly. There is also another TSB (04-06-04-088C) out for the fuel pump connector on top of the module burning up or having high resistance. If you go to replace the pump module you should replace the fuel pump harness connector also. Inspect the top of the module connector halves for melted pins or plastic around the pins. Those are indicators of high resistance killing current to the pump. If you want to test for power and ground to the pump, use a volt meter. You should see battery voltage at the pump connector grey wire for two secs when you turn the key on. The best way to check the ground (black wire) is to voltage drop it with your meter while the pump is being energized. If the pump is open, you can rig up an old sealed beam headlamp and use the pump's ground circuit to complete the circuit and drop it that way too. Ohm checking the ground can be inconclusive. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I am caving in and going to take it to a shop. It's Been over 98 degrees for 4 days straight and today 100 +. I went under the truck this morning with all intentions on doing the fuel pump and after 10 minutes of hot hell I figured its worth the extra $200-400 labor cost plus probably $250-$350 for the pump for the shop to do it.. Plus they can pin point what's exactly wrong instead of me and my 20% mechanics skills. lol When fixed i will post what was all wrong... thanks again for all your help.

Yep, those module sender pump combos are expensive. Glad to see it's back on the road again. Thanks for the follow up. Locking thread due to problem being solved. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
