2001 GMC Yukon XL 1500 when making a tight turn (either direction) and hitting gas the car is shuddering (think parking or pulling out from parking). On a wide turn it doesn't do this. Thoughts on what this could be, or more troubleshooting steps to narrow down?

Basics first: When still a tire is "scrubbing" the surface you are on much harder than while rolling so stresses power assist alone.
You then have a list of things to rule in or out. Is PS fluid full?
If greasable are front end joint (specifically outer tie rods and lower ball joint free to move?
If you have a steering "damper" like a shock absorber for steering is it locking up, leaking or rusted badly? If not forget that if so need to drop it down to really check it from one end or remove it if necessary - replace with new.
Is belt for PS properly tensioning? Self tensioned should have arrows showing it's within range or working or a educated feel of belt tension know that's at least OK.

Checks can be done with front safely hoisted and key turned to just unlock wheel, engine off see what it feels like turning wheels by hand what you notice.

I'd begin with that list of check fix what you may find all wrong?

OMG! IF so and it staying engaged most would feel like a wounded crab walk turning on NON slippery surfaces! All trucks that old I know are not meant to use 4X4 longer than absolutely needed or feel terrible. If that alone 1st make sure it's out and if not that's a repair or it's own,
