How important is the DPFE Valve in my 99 explorer Login - Sign Up

My engine light is on for my 99 explorer, and Midas quoted me $205 plus tax and shop supplies to replace the DPFE valve and hoses. Right now, one of the hoses is completely off and I've driven it like that for over 6 months. Am I risking any damage? What's it for anyway? Can I replace it myself? (Labor was only $28)

Again, thanks.
