My 99 mazda protege has had the same problem going on for six months. the car rpm's go up 4000, when I turn anything on in the car a big change happens. The car will jerk forward any time I try to slow down or stop. we have replaced the transmission, oxygen sensor, fuel pump,spark plug(twice), the wires that go to the spark plugs (twice).etc..... A funny smell also comes from it,and the car shakes pretty hard on cold days.Three shops have looked at it and they all are just guessing( even the dealer is clueless). could it be the air compressor, or alternator? Someone save the car PLEASE!!!

are you still having this trouble?
also any other facts you could tell us would be great help.
what does the car idol at?
does the rpm's race up and down like Rmmm.... Rmmmm...Rmmmmmm.. like something is sticking?
I wounder if it could be a stuck or sticky gas pedel connection,
