Fuel pump replacement average cost for 1999 Mazda B2500 pick-up 2.5liter Sign In

I just had my fuel pump replaced on a 1999 Mazda B2500 pick-up 2.5 liter. I think I was over-charged.
I was billed $1003.29 for Fuel pump, filter, and installation. My truck died and would not restart. I had it towed to the shop, and it was fixed by the end of the next day. Can you give me an idea of average ball-park cost for this repair?

Thanks for your time & expertise!

Now seriously broke in Denver, Colorado

Dealer price on the pump itself is $491.55
The labor is 1.7 hours @ $100per+170.00
The filter can run as high as $125.00
That comes up to $786 so your coming close but it seems they are still a little high unless there was some towing or something else in there too.

Thank you for your response. According to the invoice, I was charged for 1 filter@$20.60,fuel pump;$493.55 +$13.52;shop supplies/enviro, $100 to inspect for a no start condition, I covered the towing,$60 for shipping (?)they started job on Mon. and had it back to me Tues.@5:30pm,$275.52;labor, & $40.10;7.6% tax. For future reference, is it appropriate to request that they order "other equivalent manufacturer" part?

Thanks again for your time

You can request it but that doesn't mean they will be willing to honor that request. They have to guarantee both their work and the parts they install. If they are not comfortable warrantying aftermarket parts, then they may require only OEM replacement parts. You may also find out they are all that's available. I know I don't allow customers to dictate what parts I use and any shop that cares about the quality of their repairs may feel the same.

I think it was Jay Leno who once said if the OE stuff failed why not give some other a try? Not reality - usually best to go OE, IMO,
