99 silverado 4x4 problems help befor the snow flys

have a 99 silverado 5.3 eletronic 4 wheel drive shift. in september was driving home and something poped in the front differential and started making a grinding noise. so i put a whole new/ used front differential in. while doing so i noticed my push buttons on the dash werent working. i put a brand new button assembly in and now that works. drove the truck and the grinding went away and drives fine in two wheel drive. went to test the 4 wheel drive and nothing. the lights on the dash change to 4x4 , auto 4x4 , 2wd but nothing happens but i can here tha actuator thats on the transfer case engaging. now before i changed the dash assembly sometimes the lights wouldnt light up or it would take a couple trys to go from 2wd to 4x4. im wondering if maybe it got stuck in 4x4 causing the front differential to go? but it didnt feel like it was in 4 wheel drive while i was driving. anyways now i am stuck. thinking about buying a used transfer case off ebay or something and swap the whole thing out. the truck does have 190,000 miles on it but its in decent shape so i want to continue driving it. is there anything else i should look at
