Question is I don't really have the money to replace it right now and having a 160 bucks plus install even though I know I could do it with the proper tools isn't something I want to spend if I really don't have to. What can i do to make sure it's not a connection issue and not the alternator directly? 96 Ford Ranger Standard 2.3L with AC

One of the wires on the ALT should have 12v load test with a 3157 or any 12v bulb(think it Y/W wire). Also make sure there is 12v at the big red cable. if there is start the truck tap the ALT with a hammer few times and see if it starts charging, if it dose you have bad alt. You should also have your battery charged and tested make sure it's ok too.
