I have A 93-F150 XLT 4X4. 250K miles. Got home from work and noticed fluid leaking from rear differential. Does this sound like something a guy with a little mechanical knowledge and few tools could tackle. I am guessing a seal needs to be replaced at least. Can I drive it to the shop or should I have it towed? Shop is 5 miles from my house.

I guess the first thing we need to know is where the leak is coming from. Is it leaking from the back o0f the housing, or where the driveshaft connects? If it is from the back, get a large pan and place under the rear end, remove the cover, clean mating surfaces thouroughly. Apply a 1/4 inch (approximately) bead of good automotive silicone to the cover and bolt back up. If it is the front, it takes a little more knowledge and tools. Let us know. If you are only driving 5 miles or so, there should be no adverse effects to the vehicle.

That would be the pinion seal. It is a project that you could probably do yourself. Click here for information on the repair. Or you can call local shop and ask them the cost. Should take less than an hout to repair at a shop.
