86 Ford F 250 5.0L Keeps Cutting out Sign In

I have an 86 Ford F250 5.0L FI engine that cuts out when trying to rev up the RPM's (ie. plowing snow, going up a hill). I thought it was a fuel delivery issue so I replaced the fuel pump in the tank and the high pressure pump on the frame. I have by-passed the selector valve since the rear tank leaks. So the in-tank pump feeds the high pressure pump directly. I don't think the by-pass is a problem because I had the cut out problem before I by-passed the selector valve.

I'm not sure what I should check next. Is anyone familiar with this type of problem? I thought about maybe the fuel pressure regulator? Or it may not be a fuel problem at all. I'm just at a loss at this point. The truck runs great if it's idling or running at low rpms on the level.

Can anyone help? Thanks

Have you checked the fuel pressure with a guage when the engine stalls?

After you have checked the fuel pressure, I would check the exhaust backpressure next.

Thanks for the reply Mdaniel. I would like to check the fuel pressure while running. It doesn't cut out when idling. But the hose on the guage isn't long enough to get to the windshield so that I can see it while I am driving. I saw on a website where someone had a hose extension. Would you know where I can buy one of those?

Thanks Hammertime. I'm a weekend wanna be mechanic. Could you tell me how to check the back pressure? Do I need a special guage for that? I also have a hole in the exhaust pipe that I imagine I would have to fix first?

They do make a gauge that threads into the 0/2 sensor hole but what many people do is just drop the exhaust and drive it with open exhaust. Just be very careful that nothing is going to melt or burn in that area.
