I have a 1985 s10 p/u 2.8L 2bbl 2wheel drive 4 speed manual transmission. I am not getting enough fuel to the carb. Originally the problem was as soon as I get up to 30-35 mph the truck would bough out loose power but would not stall the lack power would last about 5 seconds and always happen at 30-35 nothing drive train related. So we replaced ignition module, rotor, distributor, plugs and the timing was correct. That did not fix problem so I replaced fuel pump and filter 2 sections of rubber hose problem still there we noticed a lot of fuel being pumped out of the return line that goes back to tank so we plugged up the return line at pump. Truck ran great so I went with that till it started spraying gas around the bolt we had in hose so I replaced fuel pump again we thought it was bad diaphragm on pumps. Replaced pump which is pump 3 on truck and it is still sending to much gas out return line can't idle unless I hold down accelerator about half way and that is real rough and sometime has white smoke but real faint all fluids are fine plenty of gas in it and fresh gas, The jets are clean on carb also.
If you got any ideals on fixing problem please let me know and I thank you.

Was your fuel pump inside the tank or on the engine?

The fuel pump is on engine. The push rod for pump had no wear marks was in good shape.

OK, then you do have a carb. Your going to have to test the fuel pump pressure and volume. If you find it low, the check all the lines going back to the tank for a small leak. Replace any rubber lines.

If the pressure checks out good, then check the fuel filter and carb.

As Hammer said - test the pump! Just plain toss the dinky fuel filter it has a few times a year if needed.

More: These things rusted while you watched around here anyway! If fuel lines are sucking air that's all you'll get and they can rust bad!

Could be sucking air right at the connection at tank too!

Comment/opinion: This last of the carbs were a nightmare and that one in particular! Owned one (same just 1984) and spent hours getting it right!
