2004 silverado with antifreeze smell

well like it says, recently i've been getting an antifreeze smell after driving anywhere. and only having to add fluid every once in a while. i haven't noticed any leaks and not finding any in the oil. btw, it is a 4x4 with the 5.3 engine. not sure which direction to look. anybody got any ideas, not even sure if it is a common problem with this model.

There is only one way this can be approached and that is to pressure test the cooling system. The leak will eventually appear. If you can smell the coolant, that means it's an external leak.

i did kinda figure that, i'll catch a buddy at his shop tomorrow and get that done, thanks alot. you know i've been tinkering with cars and trucks before i was even driving (30+ years) but when i go to reading through posts hoping i might be able to help someone, appearantly i'm further out of the picture than i thought. but i'm here to help if i can. Thanks again

Make sure to check out the RR corner of the intake manifold area real good.

thanks guys, ive ran into a friend of mind in the parts store that runs a university garage and he"s going to look at it for me. he mentioned the water pump on those models and also mentioned that it was hard to detect until they get worse. thanks again

tadsdad, the easy way to see if the water pump is the culprit would be to look at the "weep holes" on the body of the pump. If there is coolant, or even a stain or corrosion, the pump is suspect.
