2003 Tahoe locks up system and shuts off while driving
|
|

2003 Tahoe experiences system "lock up" while driving, shuts down and won't start. Picture displays a circle with a lock in it, on dash. Diagnostic codes U-1000, B-2960, B-2961, U1305, U-1016 per mechanic who cannot get truck re started. It appears related to alarm system, after market, or the manufacturer's theft deterrent system, although this may not be so. GM theft deterrent is not supposed to shut down vehicle. I don't know about the aftermarket. Mechanic is stumped, thinks it could be the ignition switch and body control module, but doesn't want to replace them unless he is sure. Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing? HELP!

I know. They were both on the same image. Try a relearn You may have to do the 30 minute LEARN PROCEDURES There are two available methods to perform the programming procedure: - A 10 minutes procedure which requires a Tech 2 and a techline terminal.
- A 30 minutes procedure which does not require the use of any tools.
10 Minute Learn Procedure TOOLS REQUIRED - Tech 2
- Techline terminal with current Service Programming System (SPS) software
- Connect the Tech 2 to the vehicle.
- Select "Request Information" under "Service Programming".
- Disconnect the Tech 2 from the vehicle and connect it to a techline terminal.
- On the techline terminal, select "Theft Module Re-Learn" under "Service Programming".
- Disconnect the Tech 2 from the techline terminal and connect it to the vehicle.
- Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
- Select "VTD Re-Learn" under "Service Programming".
- Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON, vehicle will not start.
- Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF, the vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock(TM) Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
- Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds .
- Start the engine, the vehicle has now learned the password.
- With the Tech 2 scan tool, clear any DTCs.
30 Minute Learn Procedure - Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
- Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON, vehicle will not start.
- Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
- Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds .
- Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes , the vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock(TM) Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
- Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock(TM) Sensor Data Code and/or password.
IMPORTANT: The vehicle learns the Passlock(TM) Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle. - With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles.

Wow- what a great response. I'll advise the mechanic and we will try this. I sure hope it works. But Query: What caused the Tahoe to enter into this lock system mode in the first place???? Do you have any ideas as to why this happened? Assuming your procedure solves the problem, and I assume it will, I would like to know how to avoid this problem in the future. Is it possible to disconnect whatever caused this? is the factory theft deterrent system the culprit and, if so, how do I disconnect the whole thing? I'd like to keep this Truck a while yet. It has generally been running fine and, as an old engineering student, I'm curious as to what caused it. I think it is just terrific that you guys provide this service and thank you very much.

You could have some other failure in the system too. It's very common for the sensor in the ignition switch or the small wires leading up to it to have a problem. If you have a different key, try that also. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Thank you for this further information. My mechanic has a feeling it may be related to the ignition switch and possibly also the "auto body module" -did I quote that right? Is there a way I can either compensate you for your help or make a contribution to this website?

Well, God Bless you Guys ( & Gals, if any!). That is what I like about my country. The everyday people always try to help each other out. It gives you a terrific feeling. I don't know where you are located, but if you ever need help with New York Law, I'm an attorney on Long Island and will certainly return the favor. Thank you.

To Hammer Time: Try attorney Jack E. Long, Jr. at Long and Murphy in Naples Florida. Good man. Used to practice on Long Island. In Florida since 1991. He will help you, I'm sure. Tell him attorney Bob Zysk, who he may remember, referred you. Good Luck.

Following up with the resolution of this matter, my mechanic at Sunoco 112, in Patchogue, New York, after thoroughly testing all the electrical cirucuits on my Tahoe, performed the following repairs, which resolved the problem: 1. He removed the after market alarm system which was preventing communication with the cpm or body computer. 2. He, thereafter, was able to determine that the engine ground wire running to the frame had a ground failure and was open. Upon repairing same, along with the above, this evasive and difficult problem was resolved. The Tahoe runs fine now. My hats off to Artie and Richie at Sunoco 112, my faithful mechanics of long standing. Kudos also to this web site and to Hammer Time, for giving me real attention and useful information.
