1997 Dodge Ram 2500 Headlights not turning on Sign In

1997 Dodge Ram 4x4
Cummins diesel
Automatic
224,000 miles

I turn on the headlamps from the pull-switch, and only the parking lights turn on through both clicks. The only way I can get any response from the headlamps is to pull the multifunction switch (w/turn signal and wipers) all the way back to turn on high, and hold it there.

This exact same issue was in this forum a year ago and the advice given was:

"The multifunction switch is also the dimmer switch and that is likely your problem but you need to use a testlight to confirm that before replacing the switch."

My question is: What needs to be tested with a testlight and how is that done?

Thanks

The 1st thing I would do would be to make sure you don't have 2 bad headlight. I know it's probably not the problem but I have seen this before and a lot of time & effort wasted...Sly (This more common with no brk lights)

The just check the power output of the headlight switch going to the multi function switch. If you have input with no output, odds are you have a bad switch. You said your park lights work so I would check that circuit as well as a known good base line.....

Also check power inputs to the switch to make sure the all have 12v.

This should be the connect for your headlight switch
