1995 s10, hard to start Sign In

Just started this issue. If it sits for more than a day, it wont start at all(turns over, wont fire). If i shoot some starting fluid into it, it will fire over, and really misses out and sputters badly. if i play with it long enough, for it to warm up, it will smooth out, and run fine. If i drive it on and off through out the day, it starts and runs fine, if it sits for any length of time (couple hours or more), it again misses and sputters till i get it warmed up.
its a 4.3, 5 speed, 2 wheel drive. High mileage. No other problems or signs of trouble that im aware of.

What is the 8th digit of the VIN#?

Check your fuel pressure with an accurate gauge.

Re: 1995 s10, hard to start Sign In

If i counted correctly, 8th digit is "Z"

I dont have the means to test fuel pressure, unless i take it to my mechanic. Not a problem to do so, just wanting to make sure its not something i can fix before i do.

Also forgot to mention, check engine light does not come on. Same truck had some miss-fire issues quite awhile back, and the engine light would come on.

Re: 1995 s10, hard to start Sign In

You said if you use starting fluid it fires right up so have to begin somewhere and knowing it has correct fuel pressure would be first IMO. If you can't and don't wish to get a gauge set up there isn't much else to do.

IDK - a weak battery could be a maybe and if while jumped properly with correct voltage while cranking would be some info but if you don't want to have tools there's nothing more to suggest I can think of except send it out,

When you are cranking the engine and it won't start, do you see fuel spraying from the bottom of the injectors?

This appears to be an OBD1 system so it would not track misfires unless it has a VCM instead of a PCM. They made both that year.

It's a TBI system so the fuel pressure should be 9-13PSI but it may be a little complicated to hook up a gauge..

Re: 1995 s10, hard to start Sign In

It is OBD1, found that out back when i had other issues.

Today the truck started and ran fine, all day. Was warmer today than the last 2 when the issue started. I had the fuel pressure checked back when i had other problems, it was fine, but i am aware of the nature of it, and its complexity is why i havent done it myself, lol.

Cant get my head around it being fuel pressure when i can feather the throttle for 30 seconds, clear it out, and it will run fine the rest of the day, or till it sits for an extended period.

Thanks for the input guys, i'll keep you posted

If you can't get your head around checking the fuel pressure, you'll be trying to fix this for a long time. It doesn't matter what the pressure was back when you had other problems or even yesterday. It only matters at the exact moment you are having the problem.

Fuel Pressure? You can get it at fuel filter with adaptors and other places. Also can make stuff up if there is no port just for that.
Reasons for it do deviate include plain operating voltage of the vehicle if right is lots higher when running or should be.

GM and others fault areas can be eyelet battery terminals of side post types, connections to fuel pumps right near tanks known to part work and lose their "waterproofing" grease as well as all over the place. IMO a 1995 anything you really need to take a hard look at all that and redo or fix as indicated when seen.

Whacked issues will come and go or stay broken/failed is actually easier,

Re: 1995 s10, hard to start Sign In

The next time it is acting up check the TPS voltage. If the TPS voltage is high during starting, the PCM will enter clear flood mode and won't allow fuel injection to occur. It's possible that temperature change can affect an intermittent faulty TPS to work and not work correctly.
