lower swing arm bushing removal Login - Sign Up

I have a 2005 Polaris Sportsman 700 ATV, with a broken bolt in the lower rear swing arm. I tried to get the bushing out, no luck. Any advice?
Thanks, Greg

It's been a while since the question was asked, it's probably taken care of by now, maybe this will help someone else.

Bushings can be a bear. They are almost always an interference fit. Meaning that the outside diameter of the bushing is thousandths of an inch larger than the inside diameter of the bore it is in. Sometimes for assembly, the bore side (swing arm in this case) is heated to expand the metal and the bushing is cooled to shrink it. Sometimes they are just pressed together. Either way, it's so the bushing doesn't rotate in the bore, and wear the expensive part (swing arm) and forces the bushing (replaceable part) to wear.

The fun part. Replacing bushings. Sometimes there are special tools to remove them. Sometimes they can be pressed out. Sometimes heating the assembly is required. Sometimes you can carefully cut the bushing (a very tedious endeavor I wouldn't recommend unless you have experience doing it). You have to go very slow and be very careful not to damage the bore. When the cut is almost complete you hit the bushing with a hammer and punch.

Anyway, it may be best in cases like this for you to take the swing arm assembly to a shop and have them replace the bushing.
