I am working on a friends Yamaha that was sitting for 4 months. I have replaced the old oil and fuel that was in the bike. When I go to turn the bike on, everything powers normally. However, it won't turnover. What could be some main causes to this? I have checked the fuses already.

I'm not even close to a bike tech but can you at least clarify what you are asking? Saying "everything powers" and use of the term "turn over" which alone doesn't tell anyone if it cranks the engine or just doesn't start when it is cranking.

Just say what is or isn't happening when you attempt to start it,

T

I know what he means Tom. You need to find the magnetic switch to see if it is getting a signal to start and is delivering power. If you follow the positive battery lead it will lead you to it. There are two large studs with the heavy gauge wire and one of maybe two small ones. The small one is the trigger that closes the relay to send power to the starter. Put a 12v test light on it and hit the start button. If it lights up, see if you now have power to the other side of that switch which goes to your starter. If not you need to verify the switch has proper ground and if it does you have confirmed a bad mag switch. If the trigger wire isn't getting power, you will need to test further up the chain for power coming into and out of the start button.

What about the battery? It may have enough power to light up the gauges, but might not have enough to operate the starter.

The battery I am trying is a spare battery that is fully charged. I even tried the battery from my 2011 GSXR. I believe I discovered bad spark plugs. I am waiting for one more spark plug to come in. I first checked to even see if I was getting a spark and discovered I wasn't getting a spark from the old plugs but I am with the new ones. I will check the mag next if this doesn't work.

I thought you were saying this engine wouldn't turn over at all with the starter button pushed in. Is that so? Please be specific as to what is actually happenning or it gets impossible to offer advice of what to do to fix it.

I turn the key to the on position, everything lights up, I hit the ignition start and all it try's to do is start. It doesn't start just try's to start.

That's called "Crank, no start"

You're either not getting enough spark or not getting enough fuel. Pop off the air cleaner and spray some carb cleaner in there while cranking. If it fires up and runs on that you know the spark is fine and most likely you have some crap in the carbs. If it won't fire you are looking at bad spark.

So I got the bike to start but now when i go apply the gas, it shuts off. I have cleaned the fuel injectors, cleaned the plugs and throttle body. What can be the cause for it cutting off like it does?

This thing is fuel injected? I've never gotten my hands on one this new yet so you may need to get ahold of some factory service books to narrow down the issue here. I don't know the operational system of a fuel injected bike but I suspect its a mile different from a car as it doesn't concern itself with emissions but a car's system is primarily geared towards meeting emissions. Wish I could be of more help but I'd be wasting your time if I told you I knew what I was doing on an EFI Yamaha.

It is probably set up like any fuel injection system. Weak ignition system (weak spark) and or low fuel pressure/volume can cause stall on acceleration. Probably would be a good idea to start by checking fuel pressure. Don't know what the fuel pressure should be or how to check it on your bike. You'll have to get hold of service information.

The bike's fuel injection computer may also have diagnostic capabilities. You should see if there are any related trouble codes being stored in the computer.

Take off the air cleaner and spray carb cleaner in the intake while cranking. Does it try to fire?

With the bike in neutral it starts up then shuts off, with it in 1st gearit cranks but no start even with carb cleaner.

Its probably designed to not allow spark during cranking while in gear.newer bikes have safety features like that. You need to test it in neutral. By the fast it will fire the carb cleaner in neutral but die when it burns it up tells me it isn't getting fuel.

I will say this......i am able to start the bike in neutral. It will idle at about 500 rpms i am able to keep it running for some time by putting throttle on it so it is getting gas. The max rpms it gets to is 4,000. When i put im gear the bike shuts off.

You should really check fuel pressure. You may have low fuel pressure allowing the engine to idle and rev up a little with no load.

The engine controller on that should have some type of diagnostic system, so you can pull codes. You might have to take it to a bike shop.
