1982 Honda GL500i Silverwing Losing Power @ Speed Sign In

Morning - What could cause my 1982 Honda GL500 Silverwing to loose power over 3500 RPM, once the bike warms-up? It starts great; idles @ 1000 RPM. Accelerates well onto the interstate, but then while at cruising speed of 75 mph (~ 7000 rpm) the bike looses power after a couple of miles. I live in Rapid City, SD and the weather was in the 80's yesterday. After pulling over, the bike would turn over but wouldn't start right away. After letting it sit for about 5 min, it slowly caught (felt like an engine feels/starts after it is flooded) and I was able to keep her running. The bike accelerated fine into traffic but but lost power again after about a mile or so, this time keeping her at ~ 50-55 mph. I pulled over, waited a few minutes, got her restarted and I was able to limp into town, keeping it at or under 3500 rpm.

This probalably uses real points in1982! When was the last time you replaced them and regular tune up items?

Morning Tom - Thanks for the reply. I just got the bike, so I'm not sure about when it was last serviced. I believe that this GL500 model has a transitorized ignition system. Richard

I'm not a real bike tech but owned a few NEW Hondas that did use points. Didn't own them long enough or miles enough to need more that oil changes.

When the high revving vintage used points then liked to be perfect. Think one red lined at some out of mind # like 10,000 or so! A "CB350" and a "CB550four" 1975 and 1978 respectively - new. Been a while of course - think the 550 red-lined at near 10,000 and equated to 75MPH in second of five gears! OMG!

At any rate they both had points. At some point bikes went to capacitor discharge (an electronic ignition of sorts) which shouldn't need routine service and as said not a bike tech so can't say too much more except if they use points they would like to be perfect,

Had you checked the fuel filter.
My 91' 1500 did the same thing on a trip, thought it was vacuum problems.
It would start every time but when got up to speed it would lose power sometimes, not always, (a real bitch in the mountains hauling a trailer) but would never die. Replaced filter, no more worries.
