Hi Everyone,

First let me say I think your forums here are awesome. A great place for tradesmen and assorted car types to connect. If by some chance I have posted this in the wrong place please feel free to move it.

Ok, I want to start a tool truck business. I will be servicing a completely different sector than what the SO and Matco guys service, and I have a few business related questions.

When can you start to get paid out of the business?
How soon did you reach half and full capacity of sales with one truck?
I realize there are a bunch of parameters that I may or may not have thought of, but I am just looking for a best guess.
I need this information to help me complete my business plan. Thanks a bunch for your time.Sly

This site is composed of DIY people looking for advice on repairs and techs who give them advice. None of us have owned a tool sales business. This might not be the forum to find the answers you want.

You say it is a different sector than SO and Matco, so what exactly is the type of tools you sell and for what industry? What is the cost of a truck that will suit your needs now and into a bit of expansion? What will it cost to fuel/ maintain and insure? Do you know how much of the product lines you will service are common need/ consumable types and what will be a one-time purchase for most shops? I know I hate it when I go to the tool truck to get something that is an in-demand tool and they ahve to order it.

How much competition is in your area for the same type of product? Are you going to be able to make regular stops to service your clients? When your tool man shows up for a while and then disappears you lose faith in him and cannot get your stuff warrantied.

Do you mean a franchise or your very own business that isn't affiliated? I knew a person that worked for MAC for 20 years or more and then decided to go on his own. He didn't make it very long and now is working as a tech as a BMW dealer.

If you want to start your own franchise, you need to ask those questions to the corporation you want to franchise with. If you want to start your very own distribution business that isn't affiliated, you better have lots of money and know people.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I doubt this guy is going to have much to say. He PMed me after I had posted and simply said he wasn't going to tell anyone his business plan. When I explained that its pretty backwards to ask for advice but refuse to give details he decided to get lippy and be insulting.

I guess we can shut this down then. He wants advice about his business without telling anyone what his business is.
