Your call not to open it to all sources but that's a tough amount IMO for all three all depending on what you or he has specified.

New maybe you best chance is Harbor Freight. How can we know what is suitable for him? Maybe dedicate that much $$ towards exactly what he wants and let him choose.

If he is really into it and lacks all that and really needs it all I'd hate to spoil a surprise but if not what he had in mind of just what perhaps you two should discuss it?

You can surf out Sears, Home Centers, for new or perhaps find a local used dealer in tools and the boxes that may go with it?

Tough one,

I really don't think your going to find a new tool storage combo in that price range. The cheapest Harbor Freight combo is around $400.

I agree, you aren't going to find anything in that price range. The boxes we use would run$10,000 to 12,000 for that and even the lowest grade stuff out there will be over $400.

Yup - I didn't mention any big names for this that really does cost like that. For this as a gift you really should know what is going to do the trick. What matters? Durable, portable as in rolls around easily or lots of space?

My own only one rolls and I never need to. Assorted shops of my own things stayed put, built ins, chests of drawers (Dorman brand made for super strength and for storing or selling small to huge nuts, bolts and things. Those stack, and tops could be work bench like. Cubes that can bolt together tops to bottom, side to side. Not portable easily!

Those don't lock - you lock the whole area. Lots to think about for what you/he need beginning with more $$ for even decent used IMO,

Harbor Fright tool box wouldn't last a month in our shop. The drawer slides would fall out opening and closing them so much. Curious, but does your hubby have a lot of tools or did his old tool box give up?
