Is it possible when shopping for a car to find out where exactly the car was assembled or manufactured? I bought a 2002 VW GTI that appears to have been assembled in Mexico and I have had nothing but problems with it. I really like VW though and would like to purchase a real German one next time around

If you look at the label on the driver's door, most vehicles will tell you where they were assembled. Just wanting a car made in Germany doesn't actually make it available. Many vehicles made there are not built to conform with US Federal regulations and therefore cannot be imported to the US. They can build them in Mexico much cheaper and that's why many parts and some cars are manufactured there.
