New here, not sure were to post this. I currently have a 1966 Buick Skylark that I retro-fitted a SBC 350 and 350 turbo trans in. I welded 3/8" steel plates and welded the motor mounts for the small block, the fit is perfect. Unfortunatly, I spun a bearing, pulled the motor, and haven't done much with the car in a year or so. I'm considering bumping up to a big block 454 or 396, but don't know much about them (really nothing except they are bigger). I'm looking to get about 400-450 hp, and I'm wondering what transmission would be recommended. Also, are the motor mounts going to have to be moved again?

Here's the thing, I can get a decent running 454 off craigslist for about $1000 (bone stock of course). I have laying in my garage a sbc "010" 4 bolt main block with virgin bores. It needs machining (the basics), but all in all it's a great block that was just given to me by a friend that used to build engines. I was thinking of getting it machined with a .030 overbore and selling it (I can get it machined for $300), putting that $ towards the 454 (not sure of what I could sell it for though). Good idea, or is it just going to be a HUGE headache? If so I will just go with another 350. You only live once and I usually throw caution to the wind when it comes to cars and resto's. Just wanted some opinions from the guys who know big blocks. Thanks

IT really depends on what your going to do.Bracket racing or just bragging rights. If you really want to stay true to the buick name , hunt down BUICK STAGE 1 455 . It will give you a honest 425 hp right out of the box. Buick sold them in skylarks in early 70's stage 1 and stage 2. It will set you back $$$$. But nobody will be at the local meet with one . The SBC would be cheaper and easier for finding parts , and will have a shorter life at 400 ponies.
