Thermostat stopped & Cooling Fan Stays On Sign In

Hello! I have a 2001 Chevy Monte Carlo 3.4. I took my car to the shop to see why the thermostat stopped & the cooling fan remains on when the car is off. They told me it was my cooling fan sensor/switch. I had it replaced yesterday and today the thermostat stopped and cooling fan stays on. (I also had the system bled). Now he says he thinks its my relays. I want to know for sure what could be wrong. I don't like the guessing games.

What could you possibly mean by "thermostat stopped?"

Thermostats generally can fail to maintain proper engine temp, stay open and run too cold, or not work, not open and cause overheating. Most are pretty dependable. Air in cooling system for any reason will be a problem. Knowing it is free of air pockets is a challenge on many. Some so difficult you need special equipment to properly fill a system or any problem can and will crop up with the remaining air pockets.

The web is probably not the right place to end all "guessing games" -- Nothing is going to beat a hands on tech who knows what to look for,

Are you doing this yourself?......Do you have an ohm meter?

No and no. This is being done by a mechanic.

Well.....then we can't check this ourselves then....

I don't know your tech or shop or how long you have been using him...

In the automotive world you can break it down into 2 areas.......R&R work and diag work...... Some shops are very good in one or both areas....The diag area takes more training & understanding.....

If the shop you are using is good with maintenance and general repair then it's no reason to stop using them if you are happy with their work but it might not be a bad idea to find a place that is good with diag work....These shops are generally a little more expensive than the other ones but it's because of the higher overhead with training & tooling....

This system uses 3 different relays in combination with a couple of different modules.....So....guessing can get exspensive......This one shouldn't be too tough to track down with a shop that is familar with the system

That is helpful to regulars here. You are entrusting a real person with some real issues that somehow is not getting it. That is either the person or place is not equipped or maybe your description of the issue isn't getting thru.

The thermostat is crude. If a tech can't comprehend that they shouldn't be working on cars - no harm meant.

The fan is another thing and I'm long retired from this crap but it might be a ground issues on this car. Some of this stuff is empowered with current and is activated by levels of ground vs positive battery juice (voltage) and a working shop+ the tech should be able to ascertain where the problem is with that.

It's not unheard of. Finding just what and why may take some time and testing things. You are entrusting techs to do this and should IMO. Perhaps the wrong shop or tech and I am not on earth to blame anyone but this should be routine.

I will speak for others here. We are here to help with what we know, have done, observed and fixed with assorted levels of experience and equipment of our own.

Know that it is freaking insanely expensive to even do this stuff for real. All here are volunteering their time and what they know to you for free and you can enjoy the ads that pay for this place.............. Tom
