New to the US - How to check if dealer registered & sent title to DMV? Sign In

Hi guys,

I am fairly new to the US, here for 5 weeks now and bought a 1997 ZJ 3 weeks ago from a used car dealer.

A few questions I have:

- The dealer said in about 2 weeks I will receive my title, registration, and license plate via mail. However, I have not received it, yet - after more than 3 weeks.
Should I be worried?
- How can I check whether the dealer has done his job and sent everything to the DMV correctly?
- Is there some proof he has to provide me with, some document which states that he has filed all the neccessary documents to DMV? Cause I didn't get any regarding that when I bought the car.
- He put a temporary driving identification into my front window. For how long can I drive with that?

Thanks, Best regards,
Hans

They will have receipts for the processing. Just ask to see them.

If you look on the outside driver or passenger front windshield, you'll see the VIN (vehicle identification number). Open the driver side door and you'll also find the VIN info sticker. It's a series of 17 characters of letters & numbers. Take this VIN to the Motor Vehicle Dept and ask them to run a check to see if the dealer had filed to have it registered in your name. You neglected to say which state you're in. In California, dealers are state licensed professionals and must abide by state regulations. If the dealer failed to file ownership papers within the state's stipulated time frame (I think it's within 7 days or less), they're subject to fines and/or having their dealer's license revoked. Contact your state's agency who regulates and issues vehicle dealer's license to file a formal complaint. If he's not a state licensed dealer, contact the city or county code enforcement officer to complain he's not a licensed dealer. An officer will come out and shut his business down if he's not licensed.

Hans. Welcome to the US. That document should be exactly right or needs to be where I am. Make dang sure the VIN is exactly right. Happened to me once with an "O" and a "Q" and made a nightmare to sell a vehicle!

IMO, if the bill of sale was correct then the DMV should fix that no charge and you should be fine now to drive it anywhere but might be a snag in selling it someday - can't say. If just your name misspelled probably isn't a problem. People change names for several reasons but just document who you are should be enough if anyone does.

Good luck. I know DMVs also called RMV in some places like where I am (registry of motor vehicles) are a PITA which must be a US ruleWink
