Need advice desperately. Sign In

Today i accidently hit a car whilst reversing. I hit his passenger side rear wheel arch (i think that is what the area is called.) There was a car behind me and he took my number plate and im assuming car make and model. I stayed at the scene and waited to see if the owner would come over. The owner came out of a shop looked at the damage and the man who took my details pulled up along side him and told him something (i was still in my car.)

The man who's car i hit got in his car, didnt look at me, didnt come over to me and left. No one spoke to me, took details or even acknowledged i was there. I am unsure as to whether the damage was already there as this was all unexpected.

If he hasnt taken my details- i.e name, insurance company or telephone number should i be worried. And in the case that it was damaged before, is there a possibility that he may say it was me as someone did see me.

My car is undamaged and no trace of any incident. His had a dent over wheel arch. Also i am worried as his car was old(ish) and mine is a new 59 plated car. He may think he can get something from me, and that will increase my premium next year- im a named driver also.

please offer advice.

I think I would be concerned. The fact that he doesn't have any of your info except your tag number means he could report you for leaving the scene after causing property damage. That could get you arrested. The law requires you to supply your contact and insurance info before leaving the scene.
Of course he could get something from you. You hit his car and you are responsible for that, This way you could end up behind bars.

I can't speak for how every place or state insurance works but here you would fill out an accident report and the insurance companies decide fault (in this case a no brain-er) and your vehicle's insurance would pay for damages caused.

I hope you have the other car and owner's information, names, make model of vehicle and notes on what happened. If other party has a witness you are probably going to lose the "at fault" part and be liable for the damage. If it was damaged already you would bear the burden of proof which is doubtful.

If you didn't take down info on the other car, the other person it just makes you look more negligent.

If you hear more about this find out what the cost of damage is and see if paying it out of your own pocket would avoid an insurance hike. Here it depends on the dollar amount of damage or degree of negligence like if you were really doing something wrong and got a ticket also as to how much it would impact your insurance rates up to losing your license to drive all depending,

The only thing i can think of is CYA . Strange behavior indeed if it went down as told. Sorry but most people will react like YEA SURE. Most people react to damage to their personal property (2) ways ,,either they go ballistic OR they say no problem let's exchange info and see how much we are looking at. I would beat him to the punch , if there is one , and talk to a traffic cop Off the record and give him your story and see if he throws the cuffs on you (the court will see that you did not dodge the event ) or they will say the ball is in his court let him make the first move . He then will have to explain his odd behavior. Of course this is just hypothectical .....I've never been in a accident,,,,,YEA SURE.

I'm just curious why you didn't get out and go over there when you seen the owner of the car looking at the damage....

ohdear; Well, it's 11 or 12 days after the fact. If you haven't already notified your insurance carrier, I'd recommend doing that. Just in case. Certainly, you'd have been contacted by now? As Sidom asked, I'm curious also that you didn't approach the other vehicle's driver. Or at least, call SOMEONE? What is ''a named driver"? Are you already wanted? The english language sucks. Lift, for hoist. Bonnet, for hood. Globe, for bulb. Earth, for ground. Ect., ect. ect.
So, please be patient with us. LOL.

One thing that crosses my mind with this one is possibly this guy you ran into had a warrant out for him or didn't have a license. Obviously in either case even if he's in the right he gets punished if he calls the cops. Seen it happen a few times.
