Hello there,

Just discovered your excellent forum today and thought this would be the perfect place to get some advice before I buy myself a new (new for me anyways) car. Laugh

First off, I've never posted in a forum before so if I've done something wrong, or posted in the wrong place just let me know and I'm sorry in advance. Also thanks for your advice and comments in advance as well!

Okay.. The car I'm going to look at tomorrow is a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLX VR6 with 123,000 Kms on it, here's the specs for it:

-Power heated leather seats with memory,
-Power sunroof, windows, locks,
-Rust protective undercoating last year,
-Cruise control,
-Keyless entry, trunk
-Stock alarm
-Monsoon 8 speaker sound system with 6 disc changer,
-17" VW Rims.

The owner says she's the 3rd owner and hasn't had any problems with the car since she's had it, says that oil has been changed on a regular basis and it's always been snythetic oil only. She states that it's manufatured in Germany and this makes a BIG difference since the ones made in Mexico are prone to electrical problems (Is this true???)
And she made it a point to let me know that the car has a timing chain, not a belt, which is also better in her opinion.. And I have no idea about that myself.

So her asking price is $11,500.00 CAD, which I'm sure I'll be able to sweet talk her down to about $10,000-10,500… Hopefully anyways. Smile

So if you know about any problems with the car, or reasons I should, or should not buy it please let me know.. any advice will help!!
Thanks!!

Aaron

I don't know of any specific problems with the car but will say that VW in general has done a good job of keeping up its quality control and engineering after a spell of being somewhat behind back when.

Check the perodic maintenance suggestions in the owner's manual. I much prefer timing chains over belts and that's a plus if so.

Check valuations at the various sites like KBB.com , NadaGuides.com , Edmunds.com and others as a base idea as to what it should be worth. It really matters at 8 years old how good it has been cared for and an accident free history is a big plus.

I don't know of Mexico assy to be a problem. I would be worried about an aftermarket anything like the stereo you mentioned being carefully installed.

Welcome to the site and enjoy some surfing around here,

T
