I bought a Cat D write off that i have repaired and painted at work as im in the trade.
When buying the car i received all relevant documents with former owners name and details on, from the recovery firm i bought it off. Im just wondering what i should now do to get the car registered in my name.
I saw on the V5 That the former owner should sign it and so must i?
But i dont know the woman at all, i bought it from a recovery firm selling it on behalf of the insurance.
Im confused.
Any help much appreciated

Boy, that's a tough one.....Most people would probably say just sign the name & be done with it and with 99% of the people that would probably work but I'm always in that 1% and it would be a huge problem.....

Really what you need to do is go back to agency you got the car from and put the ball in their court. It's up to them to make sure the sellers end of the paper work is up to snuff....

Rules are going to vary from state to state.

Well if you havent gatherd im English.
So im talking about UK regulations. However the recovery firm i bought the car from were only selling it on behalf of the insurance company who paid out to the former owner of the car.
Like i said i received the V5 with the car and its got all the previous owners details on. With section 9 missing from the document. Which i would have thought she would have had to send off to the DVLA once she had been paid out from her insurance for the car.. So the DVLA know she doesnt own the car anymore.
I own the car now and ive repaired and painted the bodywork as it was a Cat D write off which means once the repair work is done it can go straight back on the road without having to have a VIC ( Vehicle identification check)
All i can think of is that.. When i send of the documents to register the car in my name.. The DVLA should already know the previous registerd owner doesnt actully own the car because they would have received the missing section from my V5 Document.

Most of us are in the US so we would have no idea about regulations over there.

As said, most regulars are from US but site is world wide of course. You should be in touch with the person or place you bought this from then take your local advice on what must be done to make it officially yours.

Have to guess and wouldn't know what to Google. Massachusetts calls the Department of Motor Vehicles the "Registry or RMV = Registry of Motor Vehicles and most states call it DMV so all different with different rules state by state.

Good luck and do it right or you may find you don't or can't own it!
