How to fix door handle? Sign In

The year is a 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. It has over 100k miles on it. I believe it is a 2.1 engine size. I am wondering about the driver side door handle that has stopped working. It can still open from the inside door handle on the driver side but not the outside. I can pull the outside door handle up but it does feel as though it is connected to the lock to be able to open it from the outside. The window has also stopped working on the same door but every other window works, along with their perspective outside door handles. It is just the driver side door handle/window that has stopped working.

GM never made a 2.1 engine. You have a 3.1 and it is cast in big numbers one the upper intake. The handle does wear out over time, and you need to take off the door skin inside to see which piece is bad. They attach with plastic clips from metal rods to connect the linkage. Either you have a worn out clip which is dirt cheap or you need an outer latch mechanism which still isn't that bad of a price. The window has nothing to do with it and is a seperate issue entirely. Its only happening on this door because it gets the most use. You need to see if the window motor is getting power and ground when you engage the switch to determine if the motor is bad or the switch is bad.

Remove the door panel and look at door handle . More than likely you will find the linkage broken . If so repace handle . Take a test light and check for pwr at the two wires going to window motor. each should have pwr one at a time as switch is moved up & down. If you have pwr try holding switch in up and at same time firmly tap the motor with small hammer. If it works replace motor . If no pwr check for broken wire in the rubber tube that goes from door to body.
