I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix with 113k on it. I work from home, while my wife does most of the driving on our other vehicle.

The question: should I fix and sell it or just sell it to a junk yard?

I'm a car novice. We're in financial trouble and don't really need the vehicle anymore, so we're getting rid of it.

Here's the list of known problems:

Hood won't latch all the way down
Rear bumper has damage on passenger side that would probably require replacing the whole rear bumper
The door to the gas lid is visibly crooked and won't go on straight
Burns oil slowly
Muffler works and sounds normal, but has a welded part holding it to the car which broke
ABS light is on
Parking brake doesn't work
Has a GM recall on it which I need to get fixed

The body otherwise appears in good shape on the parts that are painted. It's rusting underneath fairly significantly.

Is it worth the time and money to fix it up and sell it, or should I just sell to the junk yard?

I want to get the most money I can for the vehicle, but of course I'm honest and don't want to sell someone else my problem.

Gearheads, what would you do?

Appreciate your opinions,

Dan

My opinion. If it is a rust bucket underneath, it won't be long before you'll be pouring more and more money into it for nothing. The rust won't stop and the 16 year old, non-desirable, car isn't worth it to completely strip down and do rust repairs. You won't get jack from the junk yard because the price of metal is in the toilet. You could try to sell it as is. Maybe someone can use it for parts or something.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

We send these cars away HT. As said with this if too much just take what you can get to sell it. It's NOT a sought after car as DS said so don't expect much but probably get more selling used listed as a fixer upper or for parts than junking it. If to a private person make sure papers indicate that it is for parts and has known problems so no recourse. Only state, MA does NOT allow the words "As is" so say with defects known or unknown or something for your area as old as it is buyer could cancel any sale but not to a junk yard,

Ahh okay. I'll sell for parts.

I'm in WI, so as long as I say "as is," I'm okay? I don't have to fix the manufacturer recall on it, correct?

Appreciate the opinions a ton.

Hey everyone,

So my next question is if you can tell me the best websites to advertise my well-used car for sale on?

I'm kind of weary of Craigslist, as I live in the Milwaukee area. While our neighborhood is safe, it's not unreasonable to think someone may bring a gun along when they see the car. Milwaukee itself is high-crime, almost worse than Chicago. So, I'd like to make sure I can advertise in a safe way so I can screen people and make sure I get at least a few hundred bucks for the vehicle.

Curious on your thoughts. Thanks,

Dan

YOU need to choose a place to advertise it. Say in ad or with a response you'll meet somewhere else that is totally safe, full of cameras and people around.

IDK - ask if you can sell it at a place for a % of the sale? IF that freaking worried, sounds like for your life just ask what you can get for it at a used car place or salvage yard. Buyer will need the owner's name and address to actually own it I think almost anywhere with clean title that you do in fact own it? If not how could anyone know you had the right to sell it or give it away?
