Easy HorsePower Sign In

I have a 2006 Chevy Cobalt with the 2.2 ecotech 4cyl. I'm just lookin for some quick and easy ways to increase my horse power and performance without sacrificing too much MPG and preferably without breaking the bank.

How much power are you looking for? If your looking for acceleration, one of the cheapest things to try is lowering the weight of your vehicle. That means removing things that aren't necessary and don't pose a safety concern or affect the integrity of the vehicle.

Re: Easy HorsePower Sign In

Slimming the weight of the vehicle is a start and the cheapest in my opinion. If the engine has a drive-ability problem affecting it's performance, that should be checked out. The next cheapest would be a performance tune if there are no drive-ability or transmission issues. Don't know how much power you would gain from that. You would have to consult a tuner. You would also have to make sure a tune doesn't affect the operation of the emission's system which would cause you to fail an emissions inspection.

One thing that I have learned is don't modify your daily driver. Any modification to increase HP and torque is going to use more fuel and reduce reliability. The manufacture had designed the vehicle to have a balance between power and economy.

Well I don't really have to worry about the emissions thing. We don't have emissions inspections here. But I hear you on the daily driver thing. What does a performance tune consist of? Just like performance plugs and whatnot?

I'm personally not experienced with performance tuning. I do know that tuning is a modification of the software or a modification of the inputs from various sensors going into the computer. You would have to contact a tuner or someone that has the experience with that for more detailed information.

The nice thing about a tune is that you can take it back off without much of a hassle. Smile

I would like to say GM has a supercharger bolt on kit for the Ecotec that gives you somewhere around 150 hp on top of what the engine already has. It is only about $3,000 and there is no telling if the transmission can hold up to that kind of power increase. I have two vehicles. One vehicle is my toy and the other is the daily driver. I used to play around with my daily driver by modifying it, but I learned my lesson on that.
