Collision damage details for a novel that I'm writing? Sign In

Howdy. I'm writing a story where the main character is driving down a highway at night, dozes off for a moment, and runs her car into a ditch. Her car won't start afterward. She then meets a mechanic who explains the basic damage to her.

I don't know cars, so I'm hoping someone here might have some ideas for what might be wrong with a vehicle after such an accident. Presumably something that can be repaired (rather than saying the car is totaled.) Common types of damage to the engine, maybe? Any feedback will be appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

IDK you really are writing this novel? Fine, I'll play along.
Let's be so basic it hurts. It caught on a rock and broke the starter motor?

That or pulled wires off causing damage such that it wouldn't even crank the engine. There would be a zillion possible reasons you want readers to believe this part then say critical wiring damaged that allows it to start at all and leave it at that if it's not about car / truck repair chances are readers aren't too fussy exactly why in greater detailed "tech speak" if you will,
