5k repair bill?! Crazy or Calculated? Sign In

Hi all,

I recently bought a 6th gen 96 Celica SX.

Not knowing much about my cars I'm pretty reliant on forums/honest mechanics to keep my wheels on the road.

I found a place in Western Sydney with a good reputation for their work (Taurus Service Centre) to take in for an inspection/round up on all the work required.

They've quoted me at around $4,500, I apologise in advance for lack of known terminology - this is what I got from the mechanic for the following:

1500
Ducts
Power steering pump/hose (has common leak issue)
Bearings
Clamp

867
All 4 mounts (completely gone, as per their review)

1600
Front and rear shocks + wheel alignment

350-850
Timing belt (I was told it can't be accessed until the engine is taken out and the work is assessed at that point)

All in all I'm looking at around $4,500 for a car that cost me 2k!

I have no issue paying that if that's the going rate for the work outlined above and it lasts me! but i'm hoping you guys can please shed some light on if I'm getting stooged here or not?!

Thanks in advance

Don't or didn't check exchange rate for $, AU/US but close enough. I get the basic drift of the work needed or suggested and costs vs cost of a car. Repairs cost more than building vehicles new, take more time and so on. They can exceed value of vehicles frequently suggesting also that things were let wait or neglected along the way.

Get another quote if you wish and time to decide if you want to fix up this car or seek another but always suggest if used a total check out independently of what it's condition is or you could be back in the same situation.

If you believe this car needs that much work and don't wish to keep it only you can decide that. The web is incredible for info friend but you still make you own choices,

T

Curious as to why the engine needs to be removed to replace a timing belt on a Toyota. I agree with Tom that you should get a second quote.

I don't know the difference in prices between there and here but in the US, that's about $1500 to $2000

tjv: More I think about this what's with what DS just said? If all mounts are totally trashed AND on this you need to remove ONE to do a timing belt I can't see an engine removal.

Hey - not totally sure what the layout of this car is as they keep names and put on other chassis here and there. If this need ALL motor mounts the freaking engine would be all over the place driving like crap totally! IDK about that. Forces on mounts are usually one side much more than another not all unless dunked in oil or something?

Another opinion greatly needed, T

Thanks so much for the feedback everyone.

It makes sense to spend the time and get a thorough second quote, so I'm doing that exactly!

As much as I love the Celica, investing that much into an SX doesn't seem viable even if the second quote is the same - I'd be better off saving a few extra $$ and looking towards a GT-4!

Thanks again everyone,
Tim
