2000 Mercury Cougar Bucking like hell during acceleration

Alright, so I have a 2000 mercury cougar, v6 2.5L, 5 speed with a little bit over 140,000 miles and for some reason it likes to buck hard during acceleration. It only does this when I am below half a tank of gas, when it is over half it seems to run pretty well. This drives me crazy, it does this around 2rpm's and if I continue to put my foot on the gas pedal it does it even harder so I have to let go and ease it. Once I get to 4th gear it doesn't buck anymore and drives okay, just during 1st thru 3rd. I replaced the fuel filter, also bought some fuel injector cleaner and yet the problem still continues.. I have been told that it might be the fuel pump but I'm not sure and do not know where it is located in the vehicle. I just want this to stop so I can cruise and get on it every once in awhile without this happening! Lol, so feel free to tell me what causes this problem.

You need to rig a fuel pressure gauge that can be monitored while driving so you can see if the pressure maintains spec at all times.

First comes the diagnosis and then comes the fix. You can get one at any place that sells tools. Autozone may even have a loaner program.

ahh, I see. well yesterday I got a test on it because my engine light came on so a buddy and I went to a advanced auto parts and I don't recall the code that came up but my friend was looking around my engine, we cleaned the air flow sensor and he took apart my intake manifold, found a bit of oil inside, also he found a rip in the pcv tube leading to the intake, could this be the cause of the bucking? cause I'm pretty sure there shouldn't be oil in there..

alright, well on wednesday I am going to a dealership to get a new pcv valve and pcv tube to see if this will help, my buddy says there shouldn't be oil running through the hose that is connected to the air filter, sorry if my explaining isn't helping.. not much of a mechanic.. haha

Diagnosing that would save you a lot of time and money. That or put a saddle on it and enter it into a rodeo...LOL.
