$4000 sedan...Accord or something else?

$4000 sedan...Accord or something else?

Title pretty much says it all!
I'm thinking of a 1998 Honda Accord sedan, but would like to know what else I should take a look at. I've heard that older Accords have fairly high used prices, so maybe I can get something a little better/newer if I look towards other brands?
Would a Saab or a Lincoln be reasonable or no?
I'd like it to look atleast as good as the Honda, which I think is relatively handsome for what it is.

I prefer used high end cars myself . Odds are that havent been abused , most all scheduled maintenence done with record , most milage highway. I would go for a lincoln 70k miles over a kia with half that.
A high end accord or acura would fill this slot too.

There are 2 sides of every situation. The down side the the Saab or Lincoln are the repair costs. The Saab I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole and with the Lincoln, you have to remember it is a much more sophisticated electrical system and the potential for many more expensive electrical problems, not to mention the fuel mileage difference from the Honda. To tell you the truth, I would probably opt for a Toyota over all of them with the Honda as second choice.

Thanks for you guy's adivice! It looks like a Saab or Lincoln isn't in my near future.
How about a 1998 VW Passat? As far as I can tell:
Pros: MPG, looks, general quality/features
Cons: Reliability
I haven't found any definitive info on reliability, just that it isn't one of VW's strengths. Do you think this weakness is enough to offset the pros? It looks like I would save about $300 a year in gas over the Accord, so I guess I can factor that into potential repair costs with the VW.
Also, would repairs on the VW be more expensive?

They aren't bad cars but again, they can be expensive to repair. I don't see where you would realize that kind of mileage improvement over the accord though. As far as reliability goes, nothing beats a Toyota, the Camry specifically is one of the best. The Accord isn't bad either though.

What do you guys think of something like a 2000 Volvo S60? I could probably raise the money for it in the next 6 months. What other cars should I look into that compete with the Volvo? What I'd really like is all of the S60s reliability and practicality but without the Volvo styling.

Altho ive had great luck with my 97 continental.Bought with 50k on it now at 170k i would have to agree with HT. For the average joe or joan the toyota is the best overall package . I would prefer the toyota over any european, ie , saab , volvo , audi , beemer , benze. With those your paying to much for the name.

winston; The European cars are very expensive to repair. Few independants will work on them, which means taking them to the dealer for many repairs. That's not a problem, if, you have a home that you can mortgage. Personally, I'd never buy an import. Period. With that said, I agree with the other guys. Honda, Toyota, Subaru are good rigs. Whatever you decide, have it thoroughly checked prior to purchase. Make certain that it will pass your state's emission test. Good luck.

Thank you all for you advice.
My dad would be paying for repairs (yup, teenager), so it would be up to him weather its worth it to pay repairs on an import. He might not, but if he does, then I want to be well educated on what are some good models. He does often buy used Volvos, so he may be fine with an import. If not, I'll be happy with a Honda.
I'm tentatively looking into the Audi A4(1996-2001), and maybe some BMW models? Would any be reliable in the $6000 price range and have repairs that aren't all that much more than a Volvo?

winston - if price is not an object than just get what you want or are allowed. Audi, Volvo, BMW! You can spend the $6,000 on nothing for work on those!
Any used car could work out well or not but the odds will be better with more mainstream models. Service and assorted repairs will be more reasonable too,

I am listening and it will likely be useful to me. But like I said.. in the event my dad says "sure, I don't mind paying repairs on an import" then I want to know what to hunt for.
I would be asking questions about the Accord etc but I don't have any.

Ah, sorry I misread you.
