Oil questions about a 1998 Toyota Carolla Sign In

I recently bought a 1998 Carolla and it is time for an oil change. I have a couple of questions. First, and this is going to sound dumb, I can't find the oil filter and the manual dosen't seem to make and mention of it. The other is this. This car has 89000 miles on it and I'm wondering what kind of oil would be the best for this car.
Thanks for the help.

Re: Oil questions about a 1998 Toyota Carolla Sign In

Look around real hard and you'll find the oil filter. It has to be on the block somewhere. As for the oil - 5w-30 is probably the recommended oil but see what the owner's manual says. I think almost all oil sold is rated for new cars - rating SL by the API - American Petroleum Institue (for what that's worth) . If no info just use quality 10-30 and don't worry too much about it. This site is marketing a highly rated synthetic that I haven't bought yet but sounds interesting. That's just a click on the Amsoil on the header here to get more info.

I think you'll like that car. If not known check out the timing belt!! Big time important!! T
