Helpful Tips for Driving Green

Every car dealer will tell you that just because a person buys a “green” car, doesn’t mean they’re actually driving it in a “green” way. In fact, there are ways to save gas and be environmentally friendly,drivers just don’t know to do it, so today I’m going to give you a few tips. After all, what’s the point of buying a hybrid car if you aren’t going to drive it the right way?
For starters—and this is probably the biggest mistake non-green drivers make—few things are more detrimental than “jackrabbit” starts. You know what I’m talking about—you’re sitting at a red light, waiting impatiently for it to finally turn green, and when it does you slam on the gas like you’re in a drag race for pink slips.
Yeah, don’t do that. It kills your mileage and isn’t good for your car’s engine, no matter how cool you think it makes you look.
Another thing drivers often take for granted is the speed limit. For those wondering why limits are set where they are, it’s often because those are optimum speeds for fuel economy. In fact, for every ten miles over the limit you drive, you’re killing your miles per gallon by about 10%. Drive 65 mph like the sign says instead of 75 mph like your need for speed suggests, and you could actually end up traveling several extra miles before having to fill up again.
Using simple planning strategies before driving can help your mileage, too. For one, try to avoid doing your driving during rush hour if at all possible. If you can run your errands at 10:00 in the morning or 2:00 in the afternoon, do it then. Less time on the road, less time idling in standstill traffic, means better mileage. Also, group your errands together. Make one trip instead of several, and that will help, too. All of these things are intended to help drivers be greener, even if they don’t have the means to purchase a green vehicle. And if they do have a green vehicle, it helps them to be even greener.
