I have a car that burns more than a qt of oil a month. It's a good car otherwise. But given the price of oil and the fact that I am continually "refreshing" it, would it be such a bad idea just to change the filter on a regular schedule? (I buy the premium filter for a few extra bucks.) Thank you

Yes, that would be a bad idea. You may be able to slightly extend the interval since you are diluting the oil with fresh oil but don't stop changing it. You might try using a different oil on your next oil change. You've had a bunch of different cars so I don't know which one you are talking about here but you may be able to go with a little heavier oil next time. You can't do too muck of that with most late model cars but I suspect this one is a bit older. Sometimes just a different brand changes things. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

If your car is consuming over a quart of oil monthly, regularly changing the filter aids in maintaining filtration, but oil still degrades due to oxidation, thermal breakdown, and contaminants. Simply topping off oil doesn’t address these issues, as degraded oil loses its viscosity and protective properties. It's important to follow the manufacturer's oil change intervals, as proper lubrication is essential to prevent engine wear, even with frequent oil replenishment.
