Transmission Fluid and Filter Change
Hello, 2002 Chevy Camaro 3.8L 137,000 Looking for some more opinions/advice on whether or not to change the transmission fluid. I bought the car with 78,000 and have not done this myself, I don't know if it has ever been done. I read in alot of places it could do more damage than good if it's not done routinely and then flushed after 100,000. I am pretty much decided that it's not worht the risk to do a flush at this point, but I am wondering if it's good idea to at least change the fluid and filter. I am not noticing any problems, and the aspect fluid is still red and clear. It's ovbiously not bright red, but it's still clear on the stick and isn't extremely dark or anything. Any thoughts or advice would be great. Thanks!

78K is not high at all. As long as the fluid is not real dark or smell burnt, you're fine. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Sorry I'm so late with this. 137K now if never changed I'd probably leave it alone and if dirty (dark) it's probably on its way out and changing it now IMO will either speed that up or buy some time - can't tell. Could it go tons longer? Yes or no at this point, T

Thanks Tom. Fluid is clean as far as I can tell. I guess the real question is What's the risk to only change the fluid and filter?

Can't answer that but if filter is plugged up it's all over for that trans. Fluid color is a good clue that it is good but have seen trannies just snap too. It's a wearing item and lots matters how gentle you are with it. One of my own cars made ~217K and still worked fine but was scaring me with known original trans but was cared for all along. Luck of the draw. That car hoplessly rusted out but drove to the end?? T
