After you remove the brake line on the master cylinder and the mounting bolts do you have to take the piston rod off with the master cylinder or does the rod pull out? Thanks

That all depends on whether the car has power brakes or not. The master will likely come off without the push rod if the car has power assisted brakes. If it’s manual brakes you may need to disconnect the push rod from the pedal assembly under the dash.
