I have a 96 ford ranger xlt ex cab came with 3,0 V6. looking to put rack and pinion in it, yes it came with a steering box. need to remove and swap it out for a rack, I know newer models come with rack and pinion . just wondering if anyone see's any issues in getting this done. it's the only route I see in gaining the extra inch and a half for a custom motor application I am doing. as the drive head is smaller and the shaft is more of an angle towards the driver side.

Doesn't matter what came with newer type of steering on same name of model. More goes into it than that so I say don't change it and on top altered motor is just likely to be an endless problem.

Anything can be done with correct info and engineering it out. Unless totally into altering things for a reason I think you'll end up with a heap of a truck beyond reasonable fixes to put it back to where it can be used for much of anything if you deviate from OE,

That's one of the dumbest ideas I ever heard. That's a total incompatible nightmare with no benefit in the end.
