3.0l V6 automatic transmission

so i am replacing my valve cover gaskets and i am having a hard time digging the old ones out there in a lip and are so used that they are falling apart i am using a flat head screwdriver and seep to be doing more harm than good i just sliced my fingures open when it slipped my question is really is there a better way to get them out or a tool that will work better, i took the covers and the new gaskets to a local chevron shop and they won't help me cause i don't have an appointment and i have to have this all put back together by Monday to get to work. please help

There's no magic answer for this. You just have to spend the time to dig every bit of the old gasket out without bending the cover at all. You learn quickly not to push on a screwdriver toward your hand. Use a very narrow screwdriver or pick to dig it all out.
