Re: fuel pump Sign In

? Clean enough? Right pump? Whole unit or just the pump?
This is what's listed for '99 - 05 models.............

Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  3. Install a hose into the fuel filler pipe and drain or siphon the fuel into a storage tank designed for fuel storage.
  4. Remove any dirt that has accumulated around the fuel pump and fuel lines to prevent the entry of contaminants into the tank during fuel pump removal and installation.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

Fuel supply and return line fittings at the fuel pump using fuel line disconnect tools Fuel pump module electrical connector 6 retaining bolts around the perimeter of the fuel pump module Fuel pump module and seal from the fuel tank

To install:
  1. Clean the fuel pump module mounting flange and fuel tank mounting surface.
  2. Install or connect the following:

New seal and the fuel pump module using care not to damage the inlet filter and fuel sending unit float arm 6 retaining bolts and tighten to 80-107 inch lbs. (9-12 Nm)

Fig. Tighten the fuel pump mounting bolts to 80-107 inch lbs. (9-12 Nm) Fuel pump module electrical connector Fuel supply and return lines to the fuel pump module. Pull on the fuel line fittings to verify engagement.
  3. Add a minimum of 10 gallons (38L) of clean fuel to the fuel tank and check for leaks.
  4. Install a Fuel pressure gauge to the Schrader valve on the fuel injection supply manifold.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6. Cycle the ignition switch from the OFF to ON position 5-10 times for 3 second intervals or until the fuel pressure gauge shows at least 35 psi (241 kPa).
  7. Check for fuel leaks.
  8. Remove the fuel pressure gauge.
  9. Start the engine and recheck for fuel leaks.
  10. Road test the vehicle and check for proper operation.

See fuel pump under fuel tank in this section.
Testing

Fig. The fuel pressure test port is located on the fuel rail, under the protective cap
CAUTION Observe all applicable safety precautions when working around fuel. Whenever servicing the fuel system, always work in a well ventilated area. Do not allow fuel spray or vapors to come in contact with a spark or open flame. Keep a dry chemical fire extinguisher near the work area. Always keep fuel in a container specifically designed for fuel storage; also, always properly seal fuel containers to avoid the possibility of fire or explosion.
  1. Check all hoses and lines for kinks and leaking. Repair as necessary.
  2. Check all electrical connections for looseness and corrosion. Repair as necessary.
  3. Turn the ignition key from the OFF position to the RUN position several times (do not start the engine) and verify that the pump runs briefly each time, (you will here a low humming sound from the fuel tank).

NOTE Check that the inertia switch is reset before diagnosing power supply problems to the fuel pump.

The use of a scan tool is required to perform these tests.
  1. Turn the ignition key OFF .
  2. Connect a suitable fuel pressure gauge to the fuel test port (Schrader valve) on the fuel rail.
  3. Connect the scan tool and turn the ignition key ON but do not start the engine.
  4. Following the scan tool manufacturer's instructions, enter the output test mode and run the fuel pump to obtain the maximum fuel pressure.
  5. The fuel pressure should be between 30-45 psi (210-310 kPa).
  6. If the fuel pressure is within specification the pump is working properly. If not, continue with the test.
  7. Check the pump ground connection and service as necessary.
  8. Turn the ignition key ON .
  9. Using the scan tool, enter output test mode and turn on the fuel pump circuit.
  10. Using a Digital Volt Ohmmeter (DVOM), check for voltage (approximately 10.5 volts) at the fuel pump electrical connector.
  11. If the pump is getting a good voltage supply, the ground connection is good and the fuel pressure is not within specification, then replace the pump.
