accelerator pump plunger

well gentlemen.
one more.
the accelerator pump plunger on a Quadrajet keeps rotting away creating starting problems.
all the kits i looked at all have the rubber plunger.
cannot find the old style plunger with leather.
is there a kit available with leather or what do you recommend for this problem?

Those cups are made of Viton and they don't rot out. Something else must be happening to you or there is something in the fuel other than regular fuel.

What do you mean by "rotting away"? What are you actually seeing?

I remember those old leather pumps. Yea you really can't find those anymore...
What kind of time frame are we talking about here between rebuilds???
Just off the top of my head I'm wondering if you have a bunch of junk in your tank that is getting past the in carb filter and damaging the acccelerator pump. I've seen a lot of guys put extra inline fuel filters in between the pump & tank (this helps out the fuel pump as well)
I think I would try an extra filter and see if that helps out.....
( I know, it's not fair..... I recommend installing filter in the steel fuel line on this model but not on a Toyota..  )......

I have no idea what is happening to you but I have owned many a quadrajet and never had that problem. I have one in my driveway right now and rebuilt the carb last year after 30 years and it was still working fine and has ever since the rebuild with a new cup also.

I was thinking the same thing HT.
I don't do much carb work now so can't comment on the quality of todays kits but back in the day I can't ever remember something like this happening, multiple times......
It possible try getting a different brand kit..........

I know this is an oldie , but , it bugs the heck out of me . I've done hundreds of carbs , a large precentage of them quads .I have never seen a cup fall apart . I've seen them run in high test , ethenol , av gas . nitro , all types of blends . Run on blowers , backfiring big blocks , and even (gasp) airboats , both aircaft & car engines . The cups wear but don't come apart. MY best guess are (1) the linkage is modified or screwed up allowing to much stroke and bottoming out the cup and tearing it. (2) there is a resriction in the pump discharge circuit forcing the cup to invert. (3) Some type of damage to the pump bore tearing the cup.
