trouble shifting 1st gear from stop Sign In

Hello experts,
I have a 2000 honda civic, 83000 miles, automatic trans. 1.6 engine. It runs well until it warms up (after about 20-25 min of actual driving).
Symptoms when moving from a stop:
- if I press hard on the has, car shakes and has trouble shifting 1st gear when i
- if i let it move for a bit a press slowly, it usually shifts.
- these last 2 symptoms are worse if I am on a hill.
- if i am on a hill the car (at a red light) the car starts moving backward if don't press the brakes.
- sometimes i hear a grinding noise if i go from reverse to drive.
- other gear seems good.
- it gave me a code before that mentioned "solenoid", "low fluid" and something else i don't remember. Unfortunately the check engine light is not on now because the battery was dead for a while.

I checked the fluid, it's not low. Why is it doing it only after driving for a while? Any help will be appreciated!

Best.

Hello,
The most common problem with honda units is the filter get clogged, this would affect the trans when it heats up, when your having the problem in drive when the car is hot, hows reverse? sluggish too? By chance was the code you has a P0740. When the car is hot does it ever stop moving on you? Gary

Did you check fluid level as per specific instructions in owner's manual? Most you check warm, car level and in park with engine running. It would read higher if not running. Some you check in "N" and not that many but not sure unless I looked it up.

You've got codes that to me don't mean much if fluid isn't correct and properly full. Noise and slipping is buying you a total redo of that trans and it isn't my forte but they don't like that at all,

Hello Gary,
Thanks for the reply. Reverse is fine no problem (i even joke i could just drive it in reverse!). The code, I am almost certain it was P0730 (incorrect gear ratio), now it's coming back to me.
The car never stops moving when it warms up.
It the filter an easy enough fix?

Hello Tom,
Thanks for the input, I did check the fluid but not like you described. The car was warm though, but not running. I could do that to double check.

Best.

Hello,
If you have no problem in reverse, then the filter isn't your problem.( I do at least one honda a week in my shop, almost everyone has a filter problem).
Filter is not an easy fix, its inside the trans. Question, when the car heats up and your feeling the problem, do you hear any noises that may change pitch when you rev the car.
When you check the fluid on hondas, have the car hot, level ground and the engine off. With hondas, the engine has to remain off when checking because the fluid will splash on the dipstick that will cause a higher reading. Gary
P0730 is gear ratio error.

Hello there,
I do not hear any changes in pitch, except for when it finally shifts (after a 2-3 seconds) then the engine is relieved. If i let the car roll a bit and press slowly, it seems to shift better, but sometimes i get a small shake, then i can accelerate without chocking the engine. When i am on a hill I cannot do this trick.

Hello,
ok, so the only trouble your having is taking off from a stop, how is the engagement from park to drive? is there a delay?

From park to drive is fine, no delays and no major noise, just a click.

Re: trouble shifting 1st gear from stop Sign In

Hello,
With reverse ok, the problem has to be something with the 1st clutch drum, on the civics up to the year 2000, the transmissions had a problem of the low clutch drum or the 1st clutch drum developing a crack in the drum causing the clutchs to burn which will cause it to slip on take off. If its not that, it possible the feed pipe bushing is worn allowing fluid to bypass when hot. If you dont mind can you post the vin number of the honda, i would like to id the trans to see if the one where the low drum cracks, 2000 was kinda a split year. i have a program that lets me id the trans through the vin of the car. Could this be an engine misfire problem? The symptoms your describing, other than the transmission trouble code you provided, would point to an ignition related misfire condition when the engine is under load. I don't think I've heard a transmission causing an engine to choke out on acceleration. Wasn't uncommon for them to have worn plug wires, oil leaking into the spark plug wells, or worn ignition components to cause misfiring. Would be important to be sure you have no drive-ability issues because it would affect the operation and performance of the transmission.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
