I have a 1989 dodge d100 pickup. 318 automatic 4wd. the transmission slips out of 3rd gear into second gear while driving. after a few seconds it goes back into high gear. it does this after it is warmed up from driving. i havent tried anything yet. transmission fluid was changed about 3000 miles ago.

3 or 4 speed?
Make sure the throttle kick down rod is adjusted and operating properly.

Ok so after further review I gave an incorrect symptom. The transmission shifts from 1st to 2nd at about 15 mph. It doesn't want to shift from 2nd to 3rd. It takes a long time to shift. Sometimes a couple of miles.

Have you verified that the fluid level is good? Could've sprung a leak in a short amount of time. You would still want to verify the kickdown is properly adjusted as DS mentioned. If it isn't that can kill this trans in short order. When you changed the fluid did you adjust the bands?

I havent checked fluid in a couple of days but i will. I'm not sure about the bands...I didnt change the fluid. I am by no means a mechanic. I am trying to locate the kick down arm to check it. Pedal floored the arm shouldnt move much. Is this right?? Looking online...my Haynes manual hasnt arrived yet. Is adjusting bands something I could do myself or does a tranny guy need to handle that?

You would need a dial torque wrench that can read in inch-pounds, so if you don't have that you'd be better off taking it in. Your kickdown cable is hooked onto the throttle arm alongside the throttle cable.

Probably won't be a band adjustment. More than likely it is a 2-3 valve hanging in the valve body or governor problem.

That is more likely the case, just curious if previous work had been done to it. Also, that wrench is several hundred dollars so it really wouldn't be cheaper.

The rear clutch and front servo band are applied in second. To get into third the front servo band is released, the rear clutch stays applied, and the front clutch is applied.
The front clutch isn't applying and the front servo band isn't being released, probably because the 2-3 shift valve isn't stroking. It won't stroke if there isn't enough signal pressure from the governor, the throttle valve pressure is too high, the valve is hung, or there is trash in the governor circuit. If the kick down wasn't working right, 1-2 would be delayed, so that probably rules out throttle valve pressure.

This sounds like it is getting very complex. Transmission shop is going to rape me on this. I'm sure this isn't something that can be done in the yard? How in the world would you check the front clutch band and governor circuit, hung valves...

Would any of these issues throw a code I could get by cycling the key? A light just came on that says Maintenance Required. Is this like the check engine light?

You best bet would be to take it to a transmission shop if it is too complicated. They should verify line pressure and see what pressure is doing when the transmission is shifting. Monitoring pressures is a good way to pinpoint what area you should focus on. Valve body and/or governor may have to come off to inspect valves and bores. Not something you should do in your back yard. The transmission in your truck is mechanically shifted, except for the torque converter clutch. The computer doesn't have anything to do with the shifting part. Another possibility just thought of is the front clutch seals are hard and leaking when cold. When the fluid gets hot it softens the seal and the front clutch applies. With the age, hard seals is a good possibility.
