transmission leak Sign In

The transmission on my 85 (rear wheel drive) Cutless leaks only when engine is cold. After 4 or 5 minutes it stops leaking. Was rebuilt about 50 K miles ago (out of warranty now). Any suggestions before I take it to repair shop?

Thanks, Freeman

Re: transmission leak Sign In

hi

just a thought...something you can try yourself...these are known for the pan bolts coming loose..get a socket and ratchet and try to secure them...
DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THEM...you will damage the gasket...and cause a worse leak....
i know i have a 700R4 trans in my car and it was leaking ,getting progressively worse ...obviously noticed when it was parked...
and being a mechanic,(ithink) it took me forever to crawl my lazy self underneath and check it ..i tightened up the bolts ...and what do ya know...no more adding fluid every other day ...
if thats not it,get some spray cleaner, like brake cleaner and clean the area and then see if you can isolate where leak is at...front seal area, rear seal area....side of the case ...lines,etc.
just make sure you don't spray the cleaner on any hot exhaust ....try to do when vehicle is cold..cleaner works well.dries quickly...

hope this helps

Jim -- Thanks for the information. It may be this weekend before I can follow your suggestions and I'll let you know the results.

Thanks again,
Freeman
