1998 1500 exspress van 340,000 miles. Transmission seal leaked fluid out and was driven till tranny would go no farther. when fluid put back in no longer would shift to 3rd.would have to manually shift from second to drive. did rebuild and tranny acted the same way for about 50 miles then started working like a champ. worked great for about one month then third quit working and drive wont work unless van drifts downhill to around 60 mph then it will work till i have to slow downto under 40mph 350 vortec motor

Check engine light on? Any transmission trouble codes stored. You'll need to have a high end scan tool to get transmission codes out of the PCM. An OBD2 code reader won't be able to get specific transmission codes unless it is capable of getting on the manufacture side of the PCM.
When you overhauled the transmission did you replace all the bushings? Did you clear transmission adapts before driving it?

No ck eng light on. NO TROUBLE CODES. It was a high end scanner used routinely for tranny work. all bushings were replaced. I do not know what an adapt is so i could not tell you if they were cleared or not. Thanks for the timely response and I do appreciate your time.

When you stated it wouldn't go into third, do you mean it neutraled out shifting into third or just stayed in second?
If you have no gears what so ever putting it into drive, you have a mechanical problem in the transmission. How is the fluid level and condition? Have you done any pressure tests?

i guess neutraled out maybe more like slipped and lets the engine rev and going to drive it generally stays in second instead of shifting to 3rd unless enough speed is obtained by drifting then sometimes will go to drive' no pressure test but all fluid is new and full

The default gear is 3rd, so if you unplug the electrical connector on the transmission, you will only get third and reverse. Without power to the PC solenoid, you'll have full line pressure too. If the engine is revving in drive, you have a problem in the transmission itself. Probably wouldn't hurt to do a line pressure test to verify the pump and the PC solenoid are ok, but more than likely the transmission is going to have to come apart for inspection to figure out what happened.
Be sure to flush out or replace the cooler if you have to go through the transmission again. It would also be a good idea to replace all the solenoids if you haven't done that already and verify the computer is operating the PC solenoid properly. They also make upgrade kits that solve problems those transmissions are known for, so be sure to check that out if you want your transmission to be updated.
