Probably an adjustment of shifter linkage, maybe motor mounts or worn parts that hold shifter in place. Need to investigate where it's loose and why. Adjust or replace parts as needed if needed,

It was just because you said you could hold it that makes me really think it's not fully in place or staying there. Wear, adjustment by the description. Perhaps where things pivot is loose or worn - anywhere that't not right on target and hold it in place,

yes the shifter does not have the original firm feel, it feels a little vague/loose

Again - you can hold it by hand to prevent this so that's the issue. Can't say where it's doing this from here or how it would or could be adjusted.

All automatics I know of at least common ones are such that you need to push a button or something to get out of park or go from N to R. To go from D to N just a push will do.

Assorted mechanical trickery to do that with some sort of cog spring pushed into a slotted thing for lack of a better term to allow that. That item can wear, may be out of adjustment, may pivot on something on trans itself, stretched cable or rod and just wouldn't know without checking it out. Less likely IMO that it's inside trans as things are lubed in there but not out of the possible.

Seems at the moment it's just annoying and you can just know when to do what and prevent it. That would probably freak out a different driver.

So it would be my plan to try to find where it fails such that it can do this.

Perhaps having a helper shift thru the range and watch underhood what is going on would be helpful to target the flaw.

Some of this stuff can take some time just to find. My guess is a trans shop would be faster to find this quickly and put that issue to rest. Again, if in front of me I'd just have to look at all the possibilities and most likely areas,

The older Quests had the same issues as the Mercury Villagers did with there shifter column tube bushings wearing out and the linkage down at the end of the column coming loose.

You can drop the column and replace the plastic bushings and make sure the arm at the end of the tube isn't flopping around because of loose bolts.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Thanks DS. Obviously I didn't know of a common place to look but was pretty sure of loose or worn something as you can seeCool
